Weekend in Xylokastro
The perfect 3-day plan on the Corinthian Gulf
The perfect 3-day plan on the Corinthian Gulf
Xylokastro sits just 120 kilometres from Athens — roughly 1.5 hours by car on the national highway. It packs sea, pine forest and mountain scenery into one small, walkable town. You do not need a long journey to change your surroundings: arrive early, enjoy three full days and return without fatigue. Archaeological sites, gorges and beaches are all within a few minutes' reach.
Arrive in Xylokastro and check in at Sette Suites & Rooms from 15:00. Drop your bags and head out for an evening walk through Pefkias pine forest — a seaside path just two minutes from the property. In the evening, dine at one of the tavernas along the seafront. Your first impression will be the sound of waves drifting through the pines.
Morning: Swim at Pefkias beach, just a 2-minute walk away. It is organised and shaded naturally by pine trees — ideal for a morning dip.
Afternoon: Take a day trip to Ancient Corinth (30 minutes), where you can see the Temple of Apollo and the archaeological museum. Alternatively, visit the Corinth Canal (40 minutes) — a 19th-century engineering marvel that cuts through the isthmus.
Evening: Return to Xylokastro for a stroll along the seafront promenade. Coffee or cocktails with views of the Corinthian Gulf.
Morning: Coffee in Xylokastro's town centre, at the square or by the small harbour. Then choose between two natural landmarks: Pitsa Cave, home to ancient wall paintings from the 6th century BC, or Fonissa Gorge, a striking hiking trail through dense vegetation.
Midday: Lunch in Xylokastro and check out at 11:00. On the way back, stop at Derveni or Lykoporia beach for one last swim before reaching Athens.
